Aurora is located in north-east Illinois, among the many cities and towns composing the Chicago metropolitan area. Boasting a population of 171,782 (as of 2008), Aurora is Illinois' second most populous city and the 134th-largest city in the United States. In 1908, Aurora adopted The City of Lights as its nickname because it was one of the very first cities in the U.S. to install an all-electric street lighting system in 1881. While most consider Aurora as being in Kane County, the city actually spans 4 counties: Kane, DuPage, Kendall and Will.
