About Jac Cooper, MD, FACS

For Jac Cooper, medicine has always felt close to home. Growing up in Valparaiso, Indiana, he was inspired by his father, a general surgeon, seeing firsthand the impact a physician can have on patients and families. One experience, in particular, solidified his path. While in high school, Dr. Cooper suffered a collapsed lung during a workout and credits his father with helping save his life. “That was a pretty profound moment for me,” he recalls, “and it influenced me to say, ‘This is what I really want to do.’” After earning degrees in biochemistry and biology from DePauw University and his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Cooper completed a General Surgery residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine followed by a Colon & Rectal Surgery fellowship at William Beaumont Hospital. Dr. Cooper was drawn to colorectal surgery because it combines advanced surgical techniques with the opportunity to help patients facing conditions that are often difficult or uncomfortable to discuss. He has a particular interest in robotic and minimally invasive surgery and believes a calm, judgment-free approach helps patients feel comfortable addressing sensitive concerns. “There's no reason to suffer because something feels embarrassing to talk about,” he says. “Many of these problems have effective solutions that can dramatically improve quality of life.” Outside of work, Dr. Cooper enjoys spending time with his wife and children, grilling, golfing, and being active in his faith community. He is excited to bring advanced colorectal care to a community that reminds him of the one where he grew up.
